Is there a good alternative to Gingr?
Tato is an option for facilities that want automated phone and text answering, vaccine record reading, and self-service check-in. Whether it can replace Gingr depends on the services and workflows you need.
Tato is operating software for dog parks, daycares, groomers, and boarders. It answers calls and texts, reads the vaccine records pet parents upload, and checks pets in at a self-service kiosk.
This guide compares the day-to-day work and the records to check before a move.

When is staying with Gingr the better choice?
Staying may be the better choice when your current setup handles essential work that a replacement has not demonstrated.
Gingr advertises loyalty points, employee scheduling and time clocks, and card-on-file bar tabs. If you use those tools, make them demo requirements. Do not assume that replacing check-in also replaces your workforce or bar workflow.
Write down what works today as well as what frustrates your staff. Include the awkward cases: a refund, an expired record, a paused membership and a future booking changed near cutover. A move is worth considering when the demonstrated benefit outweighs the work and uncertainty of changing systems.
Tato’s customer portal is a web application. Test the parent journey on a phone before deciding how you will introduce it to your customers.
When is Tato the better choice?
Tato is worth comparing if answering routine calls, entering vaccine dates, and checking customers in take up too much of your team’s day.
The phone. Tato gives you a number your customers can call or text. An automated receptionist is trained on your business and answers everyday questions like hours, visit requirements, and memberships. It can transfer calls to your configured staff line.
Vaccine records. Gingr’s published review workflow has staff download a file and enter the expiration date (Gingr help). Tato reads the records pet parents upload and fills in the dates for rabies, Bordetella, and DHPP. Unreadable records can be held for review. A date can also be calculated from the administered date rather than copied from an explicit due date. Staff should compare uncertain results with the clinic document and can correct dates. Read how AI reads vaccine records for the details.
The front desk line. Tato's self-service kiosk lets pet parents check in with a phone number or QR code. For Play Park visits, it checks vaccines, waivers, and membership or pass coverage, and it sells a pass when a customer needs one. At locations that use reservation check-in, it also checks in confirmed daycare and boarding arrivals for the day.
Tato also fits dog parks and dog bars well. You can require a membership for entry, set plans by number of dogs, and compare pass or pack coverage. Read Dog bar software: what a dog park bar actually needs.
How should I compare the total cost of switching?
Compare current written quotes and the work needed to move your facility, rather than treating a subscription price as the total cost.
Use Tato pricing as a starting point and ask both vendors to confirm your specific plan. Include payment processing, phone and messaging usage, hardware, setup, migration scope, and any overlap while you retain access to the old system. Avoid assuming that an advertised feature is included in every plan.
Ask who will resolve a mismatch found during the trial import and how staff will access records that remain in the old system. Agree on those responsibilities before choosing a cutover date. A price comparison is useful only when both quotes cover the work you need.
What data moves when I switch from Gingr?
Tato’s historical, facility-specific Gingr tools provide a starting point for a scoped migration, not a blanket transfer promise. Past pipelines contain stages for these record types, but your agreed scope may include only some of them:
Owners and their contact details
Pets and pet notes
Vaccine dates
Memberships and packages
Visit and check-in history
Tags and incident notes
Reservations
Waivers
Confirm these details before cutover:
Vaccine files. Import tools support vaccine dates. Imported rows may have no viewable original file, so retain source documents and confirm file handling before cutover.
Balances and credits. Agree which balances will be moved and how you will reconcile them. Do not treat a list of imported memberships as proof that every credit or balance is correct.
Saved cards. Tato runs payments through Stripe. Do not assume saved cards or recurring billing transfer automatically. Confirm processor arrangements and which memberships need new payment authorization before cutover.
These are staff-run, facility-specific tools, not a self-service importer. Agree on the data scope and validation steps with Tato before scheduling a move.
How do I switch from Gingr to Tato?
Agree on the import scope, verify the records and billing, then choose a cutover date. Use this checklist with the Tato team:
Book a call. Tell us your services, prices, membership plans, and vaccine rules. Ask the team to confirm what can move and flag anything outside scope. Book a demo.
Request your data from Gingr. Confirm the export format and available records with Gingr and Tato. Tato’s current import tools use database exports; do not assume a CSV report is enough.
Agree who maps and imports it. Identify the team responsible for the agreed records and validation. Identify anything that must remain in an archive or be entered separately.
You check a sample. Compare record counts and balances, then sample active and inactive customers. Check pets, vaccine dates, credits, future bookings, and waiver records. Resolve mismatches before launch.
Test the front of house. Confirm the agreed portal, kiosk and phone setup before customers use it. Walk through a new household and a returning member.
Pick a cutover day. Agree when changes stop in Gingr and how later updates will be captured. Reconcile final records and recurring billing before opening Tato to customers.
Tell your pet parents. Send them the new portal link and explain how check-in works now.
Pick a slow day for cutover. Arrange any continued Gingr access with the vendor and retain an agreed archive for records that do not move.
What should I confirm before leaving Gingr?
Confirm the migration schedule, customer login process, vaccine document archive, and support for every service you sell.
How long does it take to switch from Gingr?
The schedule depends on export access, data quality, import scope, and validation. Agree on dates with Tato after the team reviews your setup; the date should reflect your migration scope.
Will my pet parents need to sign up again?
An imported customer record is not a transferred login. Ask the team to demonstrate the phone-based sign-in and account-matching process for your import. Pet parents may still need to verify their number or resolve an outdated or shared number. Test the sign-in process with imported accounts before announcing the new portal.
Do I lose my vaccine records?
Tato’s Gingr import tools support vaccine dates, but original document files may not move. Confirm the scope, compare imported dates with source records, and retain an archive. Some customers may need to upload a fresh copy.
Does Tato answer emails too?
Automated email answering is not available today. Tato supports automated phone and text answering.
Can Tato handle grooming and boarding, not just daycare?
Yes. Tato supports grooming and boarding as well as daycare and play parks. Ask to see your actual appointment, reservation and arrival workflows, and confirm plan scope in writing.
How can I compare Tato with my current Gingr setup?
Book a demo using your own requirements: one phone question, one vaccine record, one check-in, and the data you need to keep. See pricing, look at the staff portal, or book a demo.
